Dr John Evans – An Appreciation
The Foundation for Professionals in Services for Adolescents (FPSA) regret to announce the death of Dr John Evans.
John Evans was a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Young Persons Adolescent Unit in Edinburgh, UK, until his retirement. John was a founder member of the Association for the Psychiatric Study of Adolescents (APSA) when it was formed in 1975. APSA eventually became FPSA. John became the very first Chief Editor of the Journal of Adolescence. The first journal was published in March 1978 and without John there would be no journal. John led the evolution and development of it until he stood down in 1984. He was very proud of the journal.
John handed over the role to Dr John Coleman who was Chief editor from 1984 -2000. There have been many dedications to John Evans but John Coleman’s words probably sum up John Evans the best “John Evans made a huge contribution to the welfare and mental health of young people. I admired him considerably and learnt an awful lot from him”.
Thanks to John Evans our charity FPSA can offer grants to professionals who work with young people to develop their skills and knowledge.
John died, quite peacefully, on Saturday 21st January after a short stay in a care home, aged 96.
